Currently, the R-word is mentioned in Title 11 of D.C. courts to refer to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The R-word is outdated and offensive and must be removed. Congresswoman Holmes-Norton, Senator Moran, and Senator Peters have introduced legislation to replace the R-word in Title 11 with more appropriate and respectful language. If passed, this would be an important win to ensure courts of law in D.C. can become inclusive spaces for individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities.
