ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families. These accounts, approximately 20,000 nationwide, enable people with disabilities to become eligible for certain public and private benefits, including Lyft. ABLE accounts that issue debit cards can connect directly to Lyft’s payment platform, to seamlessly request and pay for rides.
Together with the National Down Syndrome Society, we’re bringing the ease and affordability of Lyft to thousands of current account holders, through the Oregon ABLE plan and the nationally available Ohio STABLE plan, and many of them are already using their ABLE account debit cards for Lyft rides. Now, account holders residing across all 50 states can benefit from increased mobility options to get to work, college classes, medical appointments, social engagements, and more. Given the estimated 8 million Americans who are eligible for ABLE accounts, there is enormous potential to improve lives together.
"We are thrilled that more individuals in the disability community will have access to affordable, convenient transportation with their ABLE Account debit cards," National Down Syndrome Society President and CEO Sara Weir said. "As the leading human rights organization for individuals with Down syndrome, we are proud to partner with companies like Lyft who share our values of inclusion and independence."
We look forward to continuing to expand our efforts to reduce transportation barriers for communities across the US, through partnerships like these, and with the National Association of the Deaf, the National Federation for the Blind, and our work with Aira.
